Annesley Investigates Road Widening Plans In Marple Centre

  • Posted on the 11th December 2008

Prospective Conservative MP Annesley Abercorn recently visited Marple Town Centre with local residents to see the area which the local Council wanted to change. Recently, the Council put forward proposals to improve the usage of Chadwick Street car park. Part of the plans involved removing part of the Hollins forecourt and Hollins Lane pavement. Annesley and local residents support improvements to Chadwick Street car park to increase its use but this should not be at the expense of Marple town centre. The Hollins is part of the local community and the loss of it would be detrimental for local shoppers in Marple. Widening Stockport Road to include more traffic lanes would simply make the shopping experience in Marple less pleasant, make crossing the road more difficult as the Council wanted to remove the existing pedestrian crossings if the extra traffic lanes went ahead. For the moment, the Council have put these plans on the back burner. Prospective Conservative MP for Hazel Grove, Annesley Abercorn said, ”I welcome the fact that the Council has listened to the views of residents and the Marple Civic Society who have campaigned on this issue. The proposals have been kicked into the long grass for the moment but we must keep an eye on this issue in case the plans ever get resurrected. If so, local residents and I will campaign against these measures.”
